Around the Precinct – 12 August 2021

Across the Alliance, many of our colleagues continue to investigate the impacts of COVID-19, from the effects of lockdowns on mental health to the benefits of full-dose blood thinners for moderately ill patients.

Meanwhile, other researchers on the precinct are looking beyond the pandemic to solve other critical health challenges, including the future of HIV care, safety for cyclists and the mental health impacts of climate change.

Full-dose anticoagulation with the blood thinner heparin improves survival outcomes and reduces the need for vital organ support such as mechanical ventilation in moderately ill COVID-19 patients, but does not yield the same positive outcomes among critically ill patients already requiring life support, according to new results from collaborative clinical trials being published today in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine.
