Burnet InstituteNew International Development Discipline Head

Burnet Institute has appointed Chad Hughes as the new Discipline Head for International Development. Mr Hughes, who has previously worked as Deputy Program Director, Disease Elimination, and Acting Regional Director, Mekong Program at Burnet, will take the reins from Dr Chris Morgan. According to Burnet Director and CEO, Prof Brendan Crabb AC, his excellent people management skills and extensive experience working in international development abroad made him an ideal choice for the role. MRFF Funding Boost to Address Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis in the Indo-Pacific

Two Burnet research projects addressing drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) in the Indo-Pacific have received a vital funding boost, announced this week by Federal Health Minister, the Hon Greg Hunt MP. Burnet’s project, ‘Comprehensive community-based solutions to reduce transmission of drug-resistant TB’ will receive AUD$2.51 million from the Medical Research Future Fund’s (MRFF) Global Health Initiative. Minister Hunt said the research had “the potential to save many thousands of lives in the Pacific and around the world”. Review connects COVID-19 with high risk of blood clots

Baker Institute scientists have laid out the emerging threat of deadly blood clotting complications in COVID-19 patients for a review paper, published last weekend in the prestigious international journal Circulation Research. 

Written by the members of the Institute’s Atherothrombosis and Vascular Biology laboratory Prof Karlheinz Peter, Mr James McFadyen and Dr Hannah Stevens, the review identifies thrombosis as a clear target to reduce fatalities in the global pandemic. Read more…

Monash CCS Wins Millions in MRFF Grants

Congratulations to Central Clinical School researchers, Prof Terry O’Brien, Dr Mastura Monif and Prof Paul Myles, who jointly with School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine researcher Prof Tomas Corcoran have won some $9M of grants under the 2019 MRFF RCRDUN Neurological Disorders Mission 2020. The initiative, which had a total of $21.8M on offer nationwide, was announced by Federal Minister for Health, Greg Hunt, on 25 June 2020. Read more…

Under the same scheme, $3.48M was awarded to boost a five-year project involving Prof Natasha Lannin to investigate the effectiveness of non-invasive ventilation during sleep in people who suffer from Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and develop an implementation package to move findings into clinical care. Congratulations also to Prof Patrick Kwan and colleagues who have been awarded an MRFF Stem Cell Therapies Mission grant for $556,460 to help discover new drugs for epilepsy using personalised medicine. Epilepsy is a severe neurological disease which affects over 70 million people globally. It remains uncontrolled in 30% of those people, creating an urgent need to identify new effective treatments. Read more…
