The Australian Centre for Health Innovation (CHI) delivers service improvements in patient care, health administration and safety.

The Alfred Heart Centre assess and treat patients with adult cardiovascular (heart) diseases, including the most advanced forms of coronary, valvular, heart muscle and heart rhythm disorders.

The Alfred Hospital Intensive Care Unit is one of Australia’s leading Intensive Care Units.

It is a university attached quaternary referral centre, providing State Services for heart & lung transplantation (including paediatric lung transplantation), artificial heart technology, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), burns and hyperbaric medicine. It also provides Victoria’s Adult Cystic Fibrosis and Pulmonary Hypertension services.

The Department of Neuroscience, in strong partnership with the Alfred Health Department of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Radiology and Psychiatry, has 17 different research groups and over 140 staff and students. We do basic and clinical neuroscience research and research training relevant to a broad range of neurological and related disciplines, including epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and other neuroinflammatory conditions, neuroophthalmology, headache and pain, neuroimaging, neuromuscular disorders, Parkinson’s Disease, dementing disorders, neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric disorders, brain tumours, stroke and traumatic brain injury/spinal cord injury.

The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) Clinical Trials Network seeks to improve the evidence base of anaesthesia, perioperative and pain medicine by supporting multicentre research, and collaborating with other trials groups. Research into peri-operative outcomes is an important priority aimed at improving the quality and safety of anaesthesia care.

The Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Research Centre (ANZIC-RC) is a bi-national centre for the development, coordination and execution of pivotal, multicentre, randomised controlled trials in critically ill patients. The outcomes of its research have changed medical care in Australia and internationally, improved patient outcomes and lowered health care costs. The parallel role of the ANZIC-RC is a teaching centre for doctoral, postdoctoral and international clinician-researchers in critical care medicine.

The Australian Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium (Aus-ROC) began as a Centre of Research Excellence funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (2012-2016). Aus-ROC aims to increase research capacity in the area of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, with specific focus on improving rates of survival and outcomes for survivors.

The Centre for Obesity Research and Education (CORE) is improving understanding of obesity and evaluating the health benefits of weight loss. We’re also an international leader in bariatric surgery.
