Celebrating Prof Stephen Jane’s legacy

Since joining Alfred Health in 2011 as Director of Research, Prof Jane has championed a vision where research is not separate from patient care but embedded within it. Through his leadership at Alfred Health and as Dean of Monash University's sub faculty Translational Medicine and Public Health, he helped create an environment where clinicians, researchers and educators work side by side, ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients. 

Among his many achievements, Prof Jane led the expansion of clinical trial capability through TrialHub, giving regional and outer suburban Victorians greater access to cutting-edge treatments. He also played a pivotal role in developing the Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre, advancing cancer research, clinical trials and innovative technologies that will benefit patients for years to come. 

Through his leadership of the Alfred Research Alliance, Prof Jane strengthened partnerships across hospitals, universities, research institutes and industry, helping establish The Alfred precinct as one of Australia's leading translational medicine campuses and a centre for world-class research. 

Alongside his executive leadership, Stephen built an internationally respected career as a clinician-researcher, contributing significant advances in haematology and translational medicine while mentoring future generations of researchers and clinicians. 

Perhaps his greatest legacy is the culture of collaboration, innovation and excellence he has fostered. His vision has improved lives, expanded access to research and created pathways that will continue to benefit patients and communities well into the future. 

"Steve, I want to thank you and congratulate you for your extraordinary leadership over the past 15 years," said incoming Director of Research, Professor Terence O'Brien, who will take over the role from August this year.  

"When I think about three words to describe Steve, I would say brilliant, transformative and inspiring," said Adj Prof Simone Alexander, Chief Executive Bayside Health Alfred.  

"If I could leave a legacy like the one that Steve is leaving, I would be very, very happy, and I wish Steve all the best."
