Welcoming a new generation of leadership

A new generation of research leadership is taking shape across the Alfred Research Alliance with several key appointments set to strengthen collaboration, discovery and impact. 

Professor Terence O’Brien commenced as Dean of Monash University’s School of Translational Medicine at the start of August, while Professor Alex Boussioutas has been appointed Head of School, commencing in October. Until then, Professor Ben Marsland will serve as Acting Head of School. 

A clinician-researcher with an outstanding track record in translational medicine, Professor Boussioutas brings extensive leadership experience and a passion for turning scientific discoveries into better outcomes for patients. He will also take on the role of Deputy Head of Research at The Alfred. 

The appointments coincide with important leadership transitions across The Alfred and Bayside Health. Professor O’Brien has succeeded Professor Stephen Jane as Director of Research at The Alfred, while Professor Helmut Butzkueven has been appointed Director of Alfred Brain. 

The move marks a significant milestone for Professor O’Brien, who established Alfred Brain after being appointed Head of Neurology at Alfred Health a decade ago. Under his leadership, Alfred Brain grew into Australia’s leading integrated neuroscience centre for patient care, research and education. 

Colleagues gathered recently to celebrate his contribution and wish him well in his new role. 

Reflecting on his time leading Alfred Brain, Professor O’Brien thanked the many clinicians, researchers and staff who helped build its success. 

“Thank you to everyone for the hard work we have all done together over the last nine years to make Alfred Brain the leading neuroscience centre for patient care, research and education in Australia,” he said. 

“The future is bright for Alfred Brain under the leadership of Helmut Butzkueven and Craig Spiers, and I look forward to working with them in my new capacity.” 

Together, these appointments position the Alfred Research Alliance for an exciting new chapter, building on a strong foundation of research excellence, clinical leadership and innovation.
