Alfred Health Week Prizes 2023

Each year during Alfred Health Week, a series of prizes are awarded to recognise the excellent research undertaken on the precinct during the previous 12 months.

Alfred Research Alliance Publication Prizes

Articles from researchers across the Alfred precinct which have been published in a high-impact journal during 2022 are eligible for a prestigious Alfred Research Alliance Publication Prize. See below for the criteria.

Formerly poster prizes, in 2023 prizes will be offered by a number of the Alfred Research Alliance member organisations for excellent research abstracts in the inaugural Scientific Abstract Competition. See below for more information about prize categories.

Please note that some prize criteria may be adjusted in light of the change from posters to abstract only.

ABSTRACT PRIZE DECISION PROCESS

Abstract prizes are awarded, and judged, by individual departments and/or organisations who have a presence at the Alfred precinct. You may nominate which prize you wish your abstract to be considered for by ticking the relevant box, or boxes, when you fill out your abstract submission form. The final selection, evaluation and decision will be made by the organisation offering the prize, not by the Alfred Research Alliance.

Alfred Research Alliance Publication Prizes

Alfred Research Alliance Prize for Clinical/Public Health Research - $1000

The Alfred Research Alliance Prize for Clinical/Public Health Research is awarded annually for the best journal article describing original clinical or public health research. The award is made to the first or senior author and is based on the impact factor of the journal. The criteria for this award are as follows:

  • Only clinical/public health research projects are eligible
  • Research must have been carried out while the author was a researcher or student working at one of the Alfred Research Alliance members, at the Alfred precinct site
  • The article must represent original work
  • Reviews, editorials and case reports are not eligible

Alfred Research Alliance Prize for Basic Research - $1000

The Alfred Research Alliance Prize for Basic Research is awarded annually for the best journal article describing original basic research. The award is made to the first or senior author and is based on the impact factor of the journal. The criteria for this award are as follows:

  • Only basic / laboratory research projects are eligible
  • Research must have been carried out while the author was a researcher or student working at one of the Alfred Research Alliance members, at the Alfred precinct site
  • The article must represent original work
  • Reviews, editorials and case reports are not eligible

Burnet Prize for Infectious Diseases Research – $250

This prize is awarded for excellence in infectious diseases research. It is judged from eligible research abstracts displayed during Alfred Health Week by an independent panel appointed by Burnet Institute who make their decision based on the following criteria:

  • Quality of the abstract
  • Scientific quality of the data presented
  • Significance and potential impact of the research described
  • Presentation of the work in the abstract

MPCCC Prize for Best Abstract in Cancer Research - $200

The Monash Partners Comprehensive Cancer Consortium (MPCCC) aims to integrate cancer research and service improvement by creating a culture of collaboration and innovation that transcends organisational boundaries and drives improved cancer outcomes. MPCCC encourages and rewards research that demonstrates our shared values, including:

  • Research excellence and innovation
  • Collaboration – multi-organisation, multi-disciplinary
  • Patient and community engagement
  • Healthcare quality and value
  • Improvement in cancer outcomes

Monash Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre (MAPrc) Prize for Psychiatry Research – $200

The MAPrc Prize for Psychiatry Research is awarded to the abstract which:

  • Most effectively improves the understanding of mental illness aetiology, or
  • Best describes the development of innovative treatments for mental health conditions

Dr Michael J Hall Memorial Prize for Respiratory Medicine – $400

The Dr Michael J Hall Memorial Prize is awarded for the best abstract detailing research into respiratory medicine, including physiology. It will be judged by a panel of independent assessors who will award the prize based on the following criteria:

  • Clarity of aims and methods
  • Scientific quality of the presented data
  • Originality and/or significance of the research for the discipline

Professor Daniel Czarny Prize for Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology – $400

The Prof Daniel Czarny Prize is awarded to the best abstract detailing research into asthma, allergy and clinical immunology. The winner will be selected by a panel of independent assessors, using the following selection criteria:

  • Clarity of aims and methods
  • Scientific quality of the presented data
  • Originality and/or significance of the research for the discipline

Noel & Imelda Foster Prize for Cardiovascular Research – $500

The Noel & Imelda Foster Prize is awarded to the abstract which in the judges’ opinion represents the best presentation of cardiovascular research. To be eligible, abstracts must detail clinical, public health or epidemiological research. The judges will choose the winner based on:

  • The quality of the abstract
  • The potential importance and impact of the research
  • The quality of the research detailed
  • The presentation of the abstract

Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute Prize for Cardiovascular Research – $250

The BHDI Prize for Cardiovascular Research is awarded to the abstract which in the judges’ opinion best represents basic research in the cardiovascular field. The judges will make their decision based on:

  • The quality of the abstract
  • The potential importance and impact of the research
  • The quality of the research detailed
  • The presentation of the abstract

Lucy Battistel Memorial Prize for Best Allied Health Research – $250

The Lucy Battistel Memorial Prize is awarded annually to an Allied Health researcher whose research was carried out at Alfred Health. To be eligible for this award, the researcher must be an Allied Health staff member who reports operationally or professionally within the Allied Health Directorate at Alfred Health.

To be awarded the Lucy Battistel Memorial Prize, the awardee (first author, or a nominated team member) must be available to present their research at the Allied Health Research Forum in November 2023.

The criteria for the award are:

  • Quality of the abstract
  • Likelihood of impact on clinical practice and patient outcomes

Henrietta Law Memorial Prize for Best Novice Allied Health Research – $250

The Henrietta Law Memorial Prize is awarded annually to an Allied Health researcher who is leading a research project for the first time. The research must have been carried out at Alfred Health. To be eligible for this award, the researcher must be an Allied Health staff member who reports operationally or professionally within the Allied Health Directorate at Alfred Health.

To be awarded the Henrietta Law Memorial Prize, the awardee (first author, or a nominated team member) must be available to present their research at the Allied Health Research Forum in November 2023.

The criteria for the award are:

  • Quality of the abstract
  • Likelihood of impact on clinical practice and patient outcomes

Alfred Research Alliance

Best Allied Health Research into Practice Award - $250

The Best Allied Health Research into Practice Prize is for an Alfred Health allied health researcher whose project demonstrates sustainable improvements to evidence-based practice at Alfred Health. To be eligible for this award, the researcher must be an Allied Health staff member who reports operationally or professionally within the Allied Health Directorate at Alfred Health. Additionally, to be eligible for this prize, the project will have used implementation methods and included an evaluation specific to implementation, such as: feasibility, acceptability, barriers/enablers to behaviour change/implementation, effectiveness of implementation, cost effectiveness, sustainment and/or scalability.

To be awarded the Best Allied Health Research into Practice Award, the awardee (first author, or a nominated team member) must be available to present their research at the Allied Health Research Forum in November 2023.

The criteria for the award are:

  • Quality of the abstract
  • Demonstrated impact on clinical practice and patient outcomes

The Alfred Senior Medical Staff Nursing Research Award for Best Nursing Abstract - $600

This prize is awarded to the nursing research abstract which:

  • Exemplifies high quality, significant research
  • Receives the highest score from judges based on:
    • Written abstract
    • Quality of the project/results
    • Abstract presentation

The Alfred Emerging Researcher Award for Best Nursing Research Abstract - $300

This prize is awarded to the nursing research abstract by an early career researcher which:

  • Exemplifies high quality, significant research
  • Receives the highest score from judges based on:
    • Written abstract
    • Quality of the project / results
    • Abstract presentation

Alfred Research Alliance

Kathleen AB Smith Memorial Award for Best Publication (Nursing) – $300

This award is presented for the best journal article describing original nursing research, according to the following criteria:

  • The article is accepted for publication or published in a refereed journal within the 12-month period preceding the award
  • The primary author must be a member of the Alfred Health Nursing Division staff at the time the research was undertaken
  • The paper must have potential for significant impact on advancing patient care.

Kathleen AB Smith Memorial Award for Best Early Career Researcher Publication (Nursing) - $300

This award is presented for the best journal article describing original nursing research by an early career researcher, according to the following criteria:

  • The article is accepted for publication or published in a refereed journal within the 12-month period preceding the award
  • The primary author must be a member of the Alfred Health Nursing Division staff at the time the research was undertaken
  • The paper must have potential for significant impact on advancing patient care.
