Burnet Diagnostics Initiative

The Burnet Diagnostics Initiative (BDI) is a commitment by Burnet Institute to develop the systems, resources and processes to support diagnostics product development and enhance translation of its point of care diagnostics research into practical health solutions.

The BDI is building capacity in Melbourne for its internal research and for engagement with collaborators and the in-vitro diagnostics (IVD) industry through strategic partnerships.

The team’s innovations have enabled the development of products for the diagnosis of infections (hepatitis E, active syphilis), measurement of CD4 T-cells and plasma separation for HIV viral load, which have been successfully out-licensed for manufacture, as well as point of care tests for liver disease, COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.

The team is currently working with Alfred Health to evaluate COVID point of care tests and welcome new projects to be discussed at any time.
